The Busy B arena, founded by Bill Jefferies and his family in 1999, originally centered on a fervor for horses. Specializing in Missouri fox trotting horses, the arena became a hub for various equine activities – from buying, selling, breeding, to training.
In a departure from equine enthusiasm, Noel Melendez, a seasoned businessman with a background in renovations, recognized the potential of repurposing the Busy B arena into an event center. In September 2020, Melendez made the decision to acquire the arena and initiate a series of renovations. The renovation journey commenced with a substantial undertaking: clearing out the interior dirt and pouring over 400 yards of concrete. Melendez, keen to preserve the arena's historical essence, deliberately retained some of the original arena fencing and horse stall windows. Further projects followed suit, including the remodeling of bathrooms, the transformation of the former horse walker area into a bar space, the incorporation of reclaimed barn wood throughout the arena for a rustic ambiance, along with the installation of bistro lighting. Additionally, the horse tack room was converted into a commercial kitchen, catering to modern culinary needs. |
Adjacent to the arena, living quarters underwent their own transformation, evolving into a modern bridal and groom suite. This space, now available for short-term rentals through Airbnb, served as an extension of the arena's newfound identity.
External enhancements were equally pursued. The parking lot was overhauled with a fresh layer of gravel, complemented by strategically positioned railroad ties for better organization. Landscaping around the arena was reworked, introducing new plant life to the surroundings. On an elevated platform, a 1953 Chevy pickup adorned the space as an artistic yard ornament and an appealing photo opportunity. Natural elements weren't neglected either. The pond was revitalized, featuring a layer of rip-rap stone, uplighting around the dam, and a central water fountain, harmonizing both aesthetics and tranquility. In a final touch, the venue underwent a rebranding, adopting the moniker MLZ. This abbreviation, drawn from Noel Melendez's surname, marked the ultimate transformation of the Busy B arena into a fresh and vibrant event center. |
